For educational purposes what are the tells? Seems like a hard one to fake.

ebay does not give much space to write the issues when reporting it is a fake.

well aside from the quality looking poor. the 9 and the 6 on subs are not closed. The month numbers are just wrong, they don't even fit correct, but more easily seen is that they are not rotated the correct way at 13 thru 23. I guess I could go on, but these are a few signs.

so much wrong, but for educational purposes, issues circled in red. Never a DON bezel on this one, but this bezel is just a horrible fake. Just look at how different the number look, ie 80 vs 85 for example.

Great stuff. I pleased to report (NOT) that I breezed right by this EBay listing. What makes this inexcusable is that I actually own a ref 345.0809 first Speedmoon from 1988. :(

Well this one got me thinking, I may want to go with a speedmoon from the 80s to help round out my speedmaster from each decade collection. :)

TA: I am a new member of this forum, and this is my first post.

I am also the seller of the "Benighted" Speedymoon that
you have listed here "for correction.

My day job is fooling around with motorcycles, and restoring old race bikes.

In THAT field, we have words that we use to express how much "respect"
a bike can have when found or restored.

Like "perfect and original to the bike" = all parts on the bike came with the bike when originally issued.

Correct = all parts are proper finish, look like they are supposed to,
numbers match and colors are right.

Older restoration = bike has been used since restoration OR bike
was restored to a lower level than necessary for "correct."

BITSA = bits of this and bits of that to make a more or less
correct looking item that MIGHT look correct from 100 feet.

Obviously, a FAKE is intended to fool
lookers or buyers, just like "counterfeit."

In the case of this watch, I don't know what I have, and have added
your language and mine to the ad, so people can be more informed.

    It looks like this:

Taddy: Thank you for the information.
I went to the discussion you listed, and I
see what is giving you problems.
I bought the watch 10-15 years ago as
a running, keeping good time early
    Speedmaster Moonphase, without
understanding what I was looking at.
For the most part, I still don't.
At this point, I am not sure how to
tell a "fake" (counterfeit= meant to
fool people) from a watch put together
from a mix of original and after-market parts.
I'm not trying to fool anybody, I just
don't know what I am looking at.
    Does it have aftermarket Bezel,
    and re-finished dials, and
    otherwise all-Omega ?
    I don't know how to tell......and I
    would LOVE to be educated.
    Thanks for writing, Scott

I don't know that we are dealing here
with a "counterfeit" or a "fake."

It is hard to "fake" a case for this
    watch - pushers and all.
and hard to "fake" the back.......

Could be that most of the watch is actual "OMEGA,"
but is a BITSA as described above.

A mixture of Omega and after-market
    parts of unknown origin.....

I would love to know !

    Scott

@moonphaselover you might want to pull it. Then show us pictures of the movement.

The bezel is interesting but alas I don't think a dot under 70 with a dot over 90 ever existed. But their might be a chance the parts are worth more separately.

The case under examination looks wrong, the pushers never had a curved cutout as you see on your example. And as noted the dial has multiple problems and does not match anything out there.

Could this be put together from authentic Omega parts? Certainly I think we would agree the dial and bezel are not, as well as the monthly date hand.

In addition to the movement pic, it would be good to see a picture of inside the case back. Case back is not correct for this model as well. The watch you have was first sold in 1985. The case back on the watch would belong on a late 1960s watch. I think others with more experience can comment on the outside of the case back, given all the other issues, I would have reservations if this too is authentic.

Earlier I had not even looked at the case, basically I stopped after looking at the bezel and dial. But the workmanship below is nothing like any of the Speedmasters I own.

As far as the bracelet, the 633 end links look suspect as well. The stamping of the "633" looks wrong.

    I don't think the "pushers"
for the Day / Date look right either........
