Simply put, this beautiful watch is a Grail-level Depression-era design classic for the advanced Hamilton collector. You can read more about the Rutledge here in Walt Odet's famous article.

CASE & CASEBACK: Elegantly curved 2-piece L&W case in Platinum & 10% Iridium measures approximately 36mm long x 22mm wide (not including the recessed crown) and about 7mm at full crystal height, a beautifully proportioned rectangular dress watch. The hard platinum case shows some previous polish and there are some minor scratches/swirlies to the case and back but the angles and edges are still fairly crisp and the downward sloping lugs are strong. By my strict standards, I rate this case as solidly Excellent vintage condition. The snap-in caseback is correctly hallmarked for platinum-iridium content, has the casemakers signature and there is a tasteful dedication on the back dating from Christmas of 1939. The inner caseback of this Rutledge shows all correct hallmarks of the era and many service marks from generations of watchmakers.
DIAL & HANDS: Original factory-printed silver dial with applied 18k white gold Gothic numerals is Excellent+ and absolutely gorgeous, with only minor blemishes from over 70+ years of life and a bit of oxidation to the markers. The minute track shows a little fading to the lower left corner but the rest of the printing is quite sharp and bold. The original white gold Cathedral hands show their age a bit with some oxidation, Very Good, with the blued small seconds hand Near Mint. With so many refinished Hamilton dials out there, it is always great to see an original in this sort of beautiful condition, especially on a special model like this one.
CROWN: Correct unsigned knurled crown (platinum as well?) winds and pulls out to the time-setting position as it should and sits flush to the side of the case.
CRYSTAL: Curved glass crystal has some light scratches and a small chip to the bottom left corner, Excellent condition.
MOVEMENT: High grade 19-jewel manual wind Hamilton caliber 982. The J272xx serial number dates it to circa 1936-37 from the best available info. The watch is running strong and keeping good time, although I do not know the service history and so cannot say that it will not need service in future. Guaranteed to be working properly upon shipment.
BAND: This great Rutledge comes on a very nice full-length genuine vintage Hamilton brown leather strap with white stitching that is probably from the 50s or 60s and easily Near Mint. The steel buckle is unsigned but seems original to the strap. This Hamilton has male strap pins and requires double female spring bars. Ideally, it takes straps of 19mm width
I make NO guarantees for the water resistance of this watch in any way, shape or form, as this watch was never guaranteed water resistant by Hamilton from new and certainly isn't any more so now. 😉
This great Vintage Hamilton is offered with a 3-day inspection period from the date of receipt and may be returned for a full refund less any shipping costs incurred by the buyer. This refund is unconditional and once I get the watch back in exactly the same condition as it was sent to you, your money will be refunded. Of course, once the 3 days are over the sale will be considered FINAL.
