Hi guys, I don't know too much about vintage rolexes, and this will probably be to $$$ for me personally. But I thought i'd ask for my interest- is a movement like this saveable? How risky would the purchase be? There's a video of the watch running on the site, but I'm not sure how strongly http://www.henrys.de/index.php?pc=pos_loupe&id=25231144&detail=g&lang= Thanks, Edwin. PS. How do you lose the 24 hour pointer....
What we see of the movement is bad, and there are hints (around 9 and 12 o'clock) that what's underneath is solid rust. I wouldn't touch it.
Very nice find. This might turn out to be more expensive than buying a nice one in the first place. It is a first generation 1655 with a lot of desirable parts, it will end up very expensive, I beleive, because a lot of people are waiting for something like that to happen. A nice first gen. 1655 with a nice original bezel and case to pair with that super nice dial you've been keeping for years. Imagine the same with a Speedmaster 2998 and you don't have the dial.
Look closely. Not sure that is the right movement in the watch. Something in missing I can't put my hand on it.... my guess is that unless you have the parts and ability to rehab the movement cheap this will be more then a good one.
Thanks for the comments guys, i honestly know nothing about vintage rolex - but all the comments make sense! And considering good examples go for 20K+ AUD , this particular piece is out of my league. Thanks
Makes you wonder if the dial even came with this case. With that amount of rust showing on the one side, you figure the dial would have suffered some damage as well. It will be interesting what the hammer brings on this one.. May just become a parts watch for someone that has a movement, etc..
I'm also suspicious about that movement. Could be a regular 1570 movement. Could explain the "loss" of the orange 24 hand? Regardless of this mystery you'll need deep pockets and a leap of faith on this one. The orange hand alone will prove a challenge to find....and expensive. Not worth the aggravation IMO. Of course, if the price is right from the get go then maybe but I doubt this will go cheap even in this condition.
No. it's pretty well documented he never had one and the nickname goes back to an Italian collector Ohh I see what you did there...
