Whatre your thoughts on the new 42mm Explorer? What about the new ceramic GMT? Which would you choose?

GMT any day - Explorer suffers from Rolex Overbloat - looks much better in the original form

i agree....i dont think you see the explorer as much as the GMT. I am hoping Rolex will eventually release the pepsi dial in a steel version.

The gratuitous and unnecessary enlargement of a well established, classic , and perfectly proportioned watch in order to satisfy 'current trends' to the detriment of aesthetics.

got it.. why is the new GMT any different? What about the explorer isn't appealing? Is it the new diameter or the case thickness?

Get whatever you like man. If you have to have us justify it then you don't want it that bad.

I personally like the GMT over the E2 The E1 however is a classic.

I also don't favor the new ceramic models so I would go for an aluminium.model gmt.

Just for clarification. The new Explorer 2 is 42mm and has the maxi dial and the trip lock crown. The older Explorer 2 was 40mm and much more discreet. The white Explorer 2 was "the" Rolex I wanted when I looked at them.

The GMT 2 is still 40mm but has the Maxi case, Maxi dial, ceramic bezel and trip lock crown.

Both New models wear larger than the model they replaced.

Go try them on, and the 5 digit reference they replaced, one will fit better. I prefer the 5 digit references to the newer models and even prefer the older bracelet and clasp, others will disagree. You need to decide for yourself.

    I have a non-ceramic GMT2 and the current Exp 2.

    Exp 2
    + Matte Dial
    + Orange 24 hand
    + Excellent movement
    - Non-rotating bezel
It does not feel too large, not any more so than a Speedmaster Pro.

    GMT2 (Ceramic)
    +Rotating Bezel
    +Excellent movement
    +Rotating bezel
-Glossy Dial, PCLs and shiny bezel...a little too bling for a tool watch, I did not like it enough to get one.

Ha I know! I am well aware of the 30k price tag. I am hoping they eventually come out with the steel version.

Both are beautiful watches- what made you decide to get both? Was it purely cosmetic? Being tool watches, they essentially have the same function. Do you have the black dial or white dial? I guess the ultimate watch would be the white dialed Pepsi GMT which Hodinkee recently ran the article on.

A nice vintage GMT wouldn't cost much more than a brand new one, and wears much more nicely on the wrist!

Old GMT or new Ex II. Ceramic GMTs are awful.

I also had both a a White Polar and a GMT (I have a 1675 and a 16710) I actually sold the white Polar. Not that it is not a great watch but compared to the GMT it just didn't quite measure to my taste. I have a E1 and a white Daytona so I just figured I was covered without the E2. I must ad it I miss the "Polar Express" sometimes, but it spent more time in the ox that on the wrist.

Between the two you listed, I would go with the GMT. I have the polar 16570T, which is my daily wearer, but would take a new GMT over the 'overbloated' ExpII.
