Explorer 1016 hands, are they replacement?

    Hi forum members

I am considering purchasing this Explorer 1016 but I think the hands are too long (they overlap the minute indexes). Also, the tritium marker on the seconds hand marker is towards the centre of the dial and I believe that is a later feature. Unfortunately I am unable to upload the pic form the vendor's website so apologies for the link instead (is there a way to copy and paste as understandably forum members do want to see pics in order to provide accurate info?).

The watch is being sold as a 1973 year reference.

Any views on this from forum members would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

On the page where the watch is advertised, go to the URL and right click, copy the link, and paste here.

That will help in seeing the watch..

The link you posted is to your computer..

Based on the document title, I think you might be referring to this piece?

If so, I'm no expert but it looks OK to me. I am looking at my '69 1016 and it has the exact same set of hands...lining up in all the same positions. Although mine endured a service by Rolex in 2012, they noted (but did not replace) the discolored hands, and the patina on mine matches the original matte dial, so I'll also assume they're also original.

I really can't see anything that disqualifies this one as authentic. In any case, it looks rather stunning. Could be a very nice bracelet as well, though I'd ask to see more photos of it fully extended.

I've seen no indication that the prices of these are going down, so don't wait too long. But of course, check out the seller to the best of your ability first. Good luck.

Regarding the bracelet, on second thought not sure if that's original. Shouldn't it be a folded link oyster? No idea really. Speak with the seller. :)

Hi, many thanks for your reply. I did try the watch on and it is lovely. I just was doubting it's originality as my Rolex reference book suggests the hands for a '73 Explorer should not overlap the index markers. Not sure now!

Well. They just barely breach the markers don't they?

Looks like a good piece to me. $9500 is fair enough for retail. Person to person they are going for $7500 – $8500 based on my observations. They are not exactly difficult to come by, but a lot harder than other vintage Rolex in the same price class (e.g. 5513).

Just stumbled over thisPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network. Far be it from me to take anything listed on eBay as reference worthy – still, interesting. Minute hand is clearly shorter on this model, and (possibly?) lines up more here with where you would expect and inuit. Though to my eye...a little bit short of ideal.

But if this is a matte dial from 1960 then we have other issues...for example, that they didn't make a matte dial 1016 in 1960. So maybe this one has a later service dial but with the original gilt dial hands? Unclear. But interesting.

It should be a folded oyster, the bracelet on the actual watch I believe is a later version

Agree should be folded, I personally don't care for the folded sorry collector's but I just leave them in the box in case I decide to flip and buy a much better fitting one like this for my tiny wrists. So I like the bracelet but expect a deduction if not correct.

Thanks, I was offered something off when I went to view the watch. Would hope to get it down to £7,400 but just not sure whether thst's a good price with the later bracelet.

These bracelets pop up from time to time for 750 +/- (mostly +) 250 depending on condition. I would be happy to get 400 or 500 off for this reason.

With a good 1016 it's generally a sellers market, still I think 10K is a little steep, ...I would offer 8750 and then 9200 and then stick hard at 9400...might do the trick!
