Sorry, to be more specific, 5k at dealers not Ebay.
Pretty sure this has more to do with good lookin Val 72 chronos going Insta-crazy than some horde of Wittnauer collectors driving prices.

Mention NASA in the description. Instant $$$$$.

Also, one account raised the price from 400 to 999 in 6 continuous bids. Dubious enough ?

I haven't seen any sales in the last 6 months under 8k...its all about supply and demand. This is a hard piece to find.
The last real sale was $8500 in lesser condition. Another sold for $6900 with the lume falling out.

a year ago in this market is an eternity. But Ive not seen anything sell that had original lume in that range in years.
Pretty much all of the hard to find piece have doubled in value since 2015. I think this falls in that category. Only a handful have traded.

He was trying to find the top of the previous bidder's bid. I hate those S.O.B.s. Early high bidders and the doofusses that think they can win with little pitiful early incremental bids.

Absurd. It's possible to find excellent Val 72 chronos for a fraction of the price, and frankly, I find the dial design of this model to be poor, especially in terms of legibility.

My goodness ...I better start a different hobby. Prices on nice chronographs regardless of brand have become borderline ridiculous.

    Cheers.

Wittnauer made fantastic steel chronographs that are largely undervalued. This model has reached stratospheric heights due to its connection to NASA but we will see some readjustment sooner or later:

"But truly we can share here that it was not a Daytona! Both they and Longines Wittnauer offered models powered by the Valjoux 72, but in both cases it wasn’t the models everybody in the Internet thinks."

Explain why it is special? Well, I'd say it is special because it is (as the description says), Mechanical (automatic). A 1960s auto wind chronograph? Would someone in the know please fill me in?

And I agree with Tony C that this model is impossible to read.

    Please. Are you selling one?

These chronographs should be held in high regard because they were rejected by NASA? Was it the "unexplained stoppages" that makes them so attractive? Or perhaps that "the crystal warped and disengaged"? Or that a "discrepancy occurred during the Decompression Tests" and that "no further tests were run with Longines Wittnauer Chronographs"? Or is it that the dial layout is remarkably difficult to read?

The "connection to NASA" as a selling point? "Largely undervalued"? LMAO!

Did you read my post and look at the link. When I wrote stratospheric, I meant stupid. I am talking about all steel Wittnauer chronographs except this one. This one was most likely never tested by NASA. Apologies accepted.

    a) I'd like to know what features distinguish Wittnauer chronographs as being "fantastic"

    b) I don't believe that other Wittnauer chronographs are "largely undervalued"

    c) while you did (to your credit) use the word "stratospheric", you then rationalized it through their connection to NASA as if it were a positive

    d) the fact that the subject watch was not tested is irrelevant

I do apologize, though, for having given the impression that you were somehow approving the price of the subject watch.

So, the word is out prior to his book being published or was this the only Val72 Wittnauer at the time?

actually he posted a link that states that the Wittnauer NASA tested is NOT the one speculated on the internet. So his comment was just the opposite.
