Evaluating vintage Seamaster 321 (105.004-64)

Hello OF!

Does anyone have any recommendations for evaluating a vintage Seamaster with the 321 movement?

I'm looking at adding one to my collection, but unlike the vintage Speedys, there's not a lot of documentation on what to look for.

Here's an example of one I'm considering for £4000:

the apparent dial condition on this one would give me anxiety.

The 30-minute sub-dial has been through some life and has distinct marks around the 10, there's a chip near the 400 mark on the tachy and I don't even know what devastation is going on between 180 and 110. The indices all look 'weathered' to a degree too, some more than others.

edit: now that I look a bit closer, it also appears the lume is missing? I believe these would have had little pips at the outer edge of the indices

Hi Donkey,

in general I love those 321 Seamasters.

The one you are showing isn`t a nice 105.004 example in my opinion. Because of the dial (especially the tachymetre scale and the indices) and the strongly polished lugs I will allow myself to judge without further pics of the movement, caseback and so on.

I would not consider buying this watch for the price you mentioned. In my opinion it is way too high and I don`t think that you would be able to sell it for the same price again.

Best

These are great watches with a terrific pedigree. Others have pointed out the significant issues with this particular example.

For that asking price, and with some patience, you will find a better one.

The dial just looks too skanky for my personal taste

It’s hard to find these with good dials, as they were damaged easily by moisture and (I suspect) UV light.

I had to look a long time to find nice ones, but they are out there.

Both were eBay finds in the last few years and neither was over $4500.

When you find a nice one you will know it. Another to share (sorry for the poor pic). GLWTC.
