I have been playing with the idea of getting a modern Super Kontiki and started looking at them until i learned what movement they are using. It turns out that instead of using an ETA movement they are using a Sellita SW200, which as far as I can figure out is a copy of an ETA 2824-2. Does anyone have any idea why Eterna would opt to use a copy of one of their movements instead of their own?

Eterna is not is the Swatch group, so has no privileged access to ETA movements or ebauches. So it is probably easier and cheaper to use SW200.

Yes, I believe that ETA is no longer supplying movements outside the SWATCH Group.

So Eterna no longer has access to movements from what was its own subsidiary and is now using copies of its own designs. That's crazy.

Well, to be fair, it has been more than 30 years ...

They are again after the court case. But the sellita was designed due to no more eta.

It somehow seems like sacrilege that Invicta can use an ETA movement but Eterna cannot.

Eterna sold the ETA division, so they put themselves in the situation they're currently in. This is actually pretty common in all types of industry. The list of wineries no longer run / owned by the person whose name is on the bottle / building is immense, and that same person goes on to start a new winery years later but can't use their surname because they don't own the rights to their own name!

Oh, I know. I'm just disappointed that Eterna has opted to use Sellita movements instead of building something in house. Obviously it's cheaper to buy the SW200 than to set up the tooling to build their own version.

I'm not familiar with wineries but I am familiar with Oldsmobile.

Have you thought of getting a vintage one they have a real ETA and not as large as the remakes. I had a early one from the 1960's sold it but I held on to one from the 1970's a little larger than the one from the 1960's and they had a cool spring loaded clasp on the bracelet. I am wearing it right now they do show up on Ebay and some times forums sells sections got mine off Ebay years ago.

RR, I've been looking at vintage ones for a couple of years now. I was just thinking of getting a new one because I figured I wouldn't worry about using it in the water as much.
