So..when I wind, the crown rotates back, the watch runs, but I wonder if it's a bad sign..it feels like you aren't winding it..Do I need to hold the crown to prevent it from rotating back?

How can you tell if such a watch has been properly serviced? Do you have any tips on winding?

Most watches (manual winders) are designed with what is known as a recoil click in the winding gears which means the watch will do exactly what you are describing. The system allows the mechanism to unwind a bit when winding is completed. The tendency is less pronounced or non-existent on automatic winders.

My only non-Seiko manual is a Omega 601 131.019 which is much nicer to wind than my 4522.

Depends how far back. If it's fully unraveling the click might be shot. A little backwards roll is normal.

I am very gentle with my Omega, but with the Seiko.. I have to use a bit more force to wind it. Of course I am careful, but it just feels weird .. So, I don't have to hold the crown from rotating back, I can let it go back?
