Hello all - first post should be an epic one...

I am the proud owner and recipient of an inherited Ed White. I'm moderately interested in restoring it to a superb state from its current average state. I wanted to get advice from you fine folks on a to do list and get some approximate cost on how much those changes would cost and the overall smile factor that might come my way upon completion.

Chime in as you see fit. I realize I'm going to take it on the chin for my band selection, but I like them.

Well my vote is get it serviced (not by Omega but by an independent watchmaker with an Omega parts account), replace the crystal, and that's it. You could maybe replace the three subdial hands if they bother you, but it might not be absolutely necessary.

Nice one. Just a good old-fashioned service, case/bezel cleaning and a crystal polish (or replacement crystal if this one is too far gone) and it will be perfect.

No need to replace or do anything else. Congrats

IMO to retain value, your approach should be to do the necessary minimum. First, send it out to be serviced properly. Second, have the crystal replaced with a correct replacement part. Thats it. Oh... and loose the stretch bracelet.

That stretch was how my grandfather wore it. I kept it in my bureau, but won't see daylight again soon for sure.

Keep the bracelet since it's a family heirloom, also please get it insured as well. It's pretty valuable these days.

Congratulations on a beautiful piece. As others have said, I would suggest servicing it with an independent watchmaker whom you can trust. Personally I would keep everything else as is, including the crazed crystal, as I think that's what gives it its unique character.

    looks awesome! great watch!

as others have said, don't change anything visible except maybe the crystal, but do get the movement serviced by someone with 321 experience and access to parts. if you Polish the crystal instead, be sure the bezel is taken off before you do - or at least tape it up, but taking it off would be better. Replacing it (keep the original in the bureau along with that stretch bracelet!) won't diminish the value.

I do kinda dig the bund though.

Is the polka somehow involved when you Polish the crystal instead of polish it?

That's a nice watch you got there! I'd be a proud owner too! Congrats!

...and yes! those bands do no justice to the watch!

    :(

I thought to get best results with polywatch, you had to be listening to polka to get the rhythm right.

service and crystal, yes. clean with a toothbrush around the pushers. if you like bright white, have the 3 small counter hands matched into white. or have the hour/minute/center hand match the small ones..... but that is only a style thing. very nice inheritance ! kind regards. achim

    What he said :)

The crystal should, IMO, be replaced, not just polished as some have suggested as those marks around the rim/curve of the crystal don't look like superficial scratches, but small fractures. I'd be worried about the sealing properties in that case. You could always keep the old crystal when getting it back from service.

I'd be totally binning the crystal and installing a new one, there's nothing worth preserving about them any more than its worth saving old springbars, they're just a liability as if they're fragile or not sealing well the watch is less protected. There's zero difference between an old one and a new one other than that the new one isn't old and crummy.

Also I'd be binning the twistoflex bracelet and the springbars on it and installing a fresh strap and set of new bars, those Twistoflex's were junk when they were new and the watch deserves something better like a quality shell cordovan leather strap or something.

In watchmaking school we always used the Clarinet Polka for this, of course played by The Polka King himself...Walter Ostanek...

Note that Frankie Yankovic can be substituted with no ill effects on the final finish...

    Cheers, Al
