I expect I'll be receiving a lot of "gifts" from my friends in USA/Europe etc.

I still want to know how our antiquated systems are going to charge GST, and who to, seller? eBay? buyer?

What a fine mess it will be.

This might explain some recent drama with Pay Pal as well.

They will have a fine mess getting it going as they would need to triple the customs staff to collect it at the border and companies overseas are not going to collect it for them.
Why do you think they haven't done it for anything under $1000 since GST came in years ago.

At first I wondered why this would be a problem - then I read what they are proposing.

Here taxes on shipments from out of country are all collected on arrival by customs staff. Having someone in another country collect Australian taxes and remit them to the Australian government for all sales under $1000, and then have the government collect them for items over $1000 - that seems to make things way more complicated than necessary.

Is the Australian government going to pay vendors in other countries to collect taxes on their behalf?

From what I have heard they are only going to get the big players to do it. FedEx ,EBay Amazon and the likes. Not your thousands of other smaller online businesses

Their reason for not collecting 10% GST for goods from overseas in the past was that the cost associated with doing so was greater then the revenue collected. I don't know if this was a BS excuse or what has changed their views.
Who knows, they may even employ foreign labour on special visa to cut cost.::facepalm1::
