True, but you need to have the talk about what his comfort level is and that you would jump in if he bows out.
I had that chat with a friend who wanted a watch on eBay that I had also be watching. I told him that I would bow out of bidding but if he didn’t bid to win it, I would be pissed becuase I would. Luckily he won it, then I got it from him in trade a few years later.

So they cancelled the auction? With it at 8k, what was the final price when they “realized” the value?

Only pulled the watch. Everything else is still there.
Estate sale / auction. The children pick everything they want to keep and have the company sell what's remaining. They changed their mind on the watch and pulled it. It's their prerogative. No clue what value the watch was up to. I was going to hang back until Thurs 😗
