I was looking over the herd, and noticed this substantial difference in appearance in two DO90 bezels.

On the left, it has a thincker, les well defined font. It looks like a repro, or poorly executed, but unlike a repro it is perfectly matching in layout. I have never seen a repro match.

What bothers me is the thickness and "fuzzyness" of the text.

    So what say the members?

font definitely looks thicker/bolder and the dot looks mixed in with a marker. Numbers are not as close to the edge -- is that indicative of anything?

How did they manufacture the originals and what were the tolerances? I appreciate everything looks a little thicker but to my eyes ( not wearing my glasses and looking on my iPhone! ) the font, position of dots, markers etc all look comparable ( as Spacefruit comments on )..hence my question is this just down to manufacturing variance.

Interesting. From photos, there appears to be quite a bit of variability in the thickness of the text. Yours has instances with no space at all between numbers. However, the 220 bezel on page 122 of MWO is similar and flipping through photos I've collected there are others that also appear to be similar although the photos are not as tight.

I've noticed the same and have always been skeptical of the style on the left. Very interested in what the speedy pros have to say about it.

Simple answer is the pad gets worn making the font "bleed", therefore making the font seem fatter and more distorted.

So, the one on right, thats sharp and thin was probably an earlier stamp than the one on left.

I do not believe there is anything "wrong" with one or the other.

This seems to be a common explanation with Rolex inserts too, same font but a worn printing pad.

All of mine have the sharp font, even the most faded one has a sharp font, perhaps not 100% sharp but not like the fuzzy ones.

Isn't this just the difference between the early DON and the later DON? The first 2998s variants after BASE1000 had that version where the numbers on the left have their upper corner or edge cropped by the steel outer ring while the later ones have a slight gap and the numbers don't touch the outer ring.
