I hit a high line watch dealer today. Thought I'd look at something with under 40 years under its belt. You know, a watch that parts can still be easily purchased for so you won't feel bad wearing it under the hood of the car or in the Atlantic Ocean while on holidays.

It took me two seconds to write off 20 feet of showcases filled with Rolexes and Omegas... One watch, a Seamaster issued for the Olympics caught my eye.... and it looked exactly like my '52 bumper! Its all bling and buttons! All the Rolexes looked the same, you have your choice of colours, bezels and features but they all look the same! The Omega catalogue I bought home is a beautiful hardcover thing, but even my kid commented that all the watches in it were the same pile of bling until you got to the DeVille section at the back. My favorite watch in the catalogue was a 60s DeVille which was in there to brag about heritage! (Odd, I've got one just like it too!)

I did find some nice things in the Frederique Constant & Alpina cases, so it seems you have to leave the mainstream stuff to find a nice clean simple "working" sports watch.

I know this will tick off some modern watch people, but wheres the classy simple watch gone?

(Dammit....can't edit the title...... its supposed to say "why I wear a 30T2.... oh well... wadda f***)

JLC has cornered the market on them so their direct competitors stopped trying. :D ::stirthepot::

You mean this MB&F doesn't count? :taunt:

    But this one should:

There are some classic dress watches still being made. Unfortunately, they don't have the names Omega or Rolex on them. Maybe a Cellini or two? Just looked on Rolex's website....Nah!

I did ave a nice JLC, an RAF bomber watch from about 1940..... it was sacrificed upon the alter of vintage hardware to finance an especially beautiful Hamilton 922 in white gold..... I'll really have to post picture of it because its just too nice not to share!

The Piaget is nice, but those 0.008" thick bridges and plates are very delicate, I don't know how well they would hold up well to motorcycles and such.... quite fragile..... and what is that other thing.... I saw instruments like that once on a vintage steam engine!

Don't know if I would have the guts to wear a non-shockproof 30T2 on a motorcycle either.

    The "other thing" is this:

    Quite Steampunk, isn't it.

Fritz, I used to do press releases for a few forums and MB&F was one of the brands I took care of…… right up until this monstrosity caused me to quit:

Haven't done a press release since.

    Dennis -

That looks like the Horological Machine all dressed up for Mardi Gras!

You get some doubloons with that?

Yeah, maybe - but exactly how small of a target market did it have? You need crazy cat ladies with tons of money to blow on a watch that doesn't even have a battery.
