    Thing is though, if it were a gold cap, why would they have gotten rid of the case and dial furniture

    Probably was solid gold - a melted case would explain why the dial & movement are in such good shape.

    Points taken... I haven't seen a dial like this in a gold case, but they made a Swatch-like universe of these things, so anything's possible.

    See, this is where a real CIS-WIS comes in, to buy the thing and dust it for tell-tale traces of 18k. As a House-MD-type WIS, I can only recommend referral to a CIS-type... see the difference?

    If he melted the gold-capping or scrapped the case for its steel content I think he ripped himself off :p
