I was also watching it. Hard to tell what was under all the cheese but it looked pretty fine to my eyes, even if the lume didn't age to a pleasing shade (on the hands at least). I think it was an attractive purchase with bracelet at $4900. If I were a potential suitor I'd like to know the movement number (and maybe how a '71 got a late 70 bracelet, even though I guess it's possible.)

    Pics for archival purposes.

@BenBagbag bracelets where dealer add on. So you can have a few years leeway on them.

Were you the one who had the high bid for much of the auction? Got sniped from under you - just $50 more than your highest bid. I wonder what the winner's highest bid would've been...

But aren't bracelets added at time of purchase, so most of them, we'd assume, are newer than the watch? Bracelet is equally cheesed to the watch so they've lived a long time together, so what you're saying makes sense.

Not crazy about the lume on the dial but with that bracelet and end links it was a good deal for sure.

I think we are just used to seeing it the other way. One year off earlier seems fine to me.

It all went pear shaped in the last 15 seconds or so, I was already at my limit... Got the feeling I was playing with the big boys

According to Moonwatch Only 1039s were possible on -71s albeit most likely not all that common with 1171s around. Dealer add ons, didn't know about that.

I was bidding on it too, has potential and will look really good after cleanup. Plus the 1039, still a nice deal at 4,7k USD.
... but just 30 seconds after I started my Ebay patrol on Wednesday something else popped up and said: buy it now! It's a transitional or 145.012, both fine for the asking price, watch karma used up for this year or more :)

When actively searching..it has become really difficult, there is so much bad stuff sold by bad people out there..I mean it has really become more than just checking boxes, it's really forensic science you have to do meanwhile to make sure everything is fine/consistent. Buying here is still a very good option.
