While admiring the sparkle of the sun off of my new pie-pan Connie while driving it made me wonder....
is the sun bad for the dial?
how do those little spots get there under the protective crystal anyway?
    care tips requested.

I have a black faced speedmaster and always spin it on to my inner wrist to protect from sunlight. Even though ive been carefull my sub seconds had has started to go yellow. I know a lot of guys on here like patina but i can live without it. The little spots on your dial are probably the lacquer starting to blister. The sun can bleach anything over time.

I want to avoid doing the things that would cause this and any other dial damage.

so the only thing that causes dial spotting is the sun?::confused2::

It seems like moisture from condensation etc. would be a possible cause also....

Wear beater for daily use. Save the special watch (especially the vintage) for special occasion. Works for me so far.
Tolerance for patina also helped. Just ask Kyle.......

The spots are the beginning of mold under the laquer coat caused by moisture getting inside the watch.

Let me play devil's advocate by quoting professor Yuriko Saito of Rhode Island School of Design, who in turn quotes a Buddhist monk in her journal article "The Japanese Aesthetics of Imperfection and Insufficiency"

-The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Vol 55, No. 4
    www.jstor.org/stable/430925

Not everyone's cup of tea, but a thought for those who think it impossible to like a flawed dial, or that only perfect examples are worth admiring or collecting.

To each his own. There's more than a few of us who are driven to find the most perfect examples we can. There's also the infamous "Kyle dial" way to go too.

Dans ses écrits, un sage Italien
Dit que le mieux est l'ennemi du bien.

A wise Italian once said that best (perfect?) is the enemy of good.

    i made that up!

haha my HS french teacher had it on his cork board in classroom (I also used as a cheat sheet for the NYS Regents. That quote has complicated verb tense.
