Price €8.2k, 41mm

 

Meh.

 

It amazes me where they come from with these prices. I mean I'm not doing bad but a simple time only from a brand like Zenith at over €8K just boggles my mind.....as I said a couple of days ago I'm so happy I'm into vintage where it's still possible to find incredible watches for under 1/8 the price of this one

 

Kidding aside, Revolution did a rather good article back in September about the reemergence of the integrated bracelet sports watch segment - which included this rather nice timeline




It makes quite a lot of sense that Zenith would give this segment its attempt, and the Defy seems the right line for it.

I note that Revolution’s infographic timeline even had one blank spot left…

 

Looks too similar to a royal oak for me. Personally never really been into watches that so closely resemble other pieces or homage pieces. They create a relationship of discontent with the watch as every time I glance down at it I am reminded of the watch I truly desire.

 

In the context of this chat, worth noting that Gay Frères made (was the only one who could make?) the Zenith ladder bracelet as well as the bracelets for both the Nautilus and Royal Oak

A historical trivia now somehow seeming relevant to this new Defy release

 

I must admit that I quite like the black dial version and will wait to see if there is a significant discount with grey market prices.

 

It's nice, I do like it but at 41mm a case design like that is gonna wear HUGE.

Also, I think the Tissot PRX is overall a nicer design of this sort.

 

So I've been thinking about this watch, and I really struggle to imagine how Zenith thought it would be a good idea to put a 10 second sub-dial on the watch (aside from the novelty factor). It is just completely pointless and useless.

 

Agreed nobody needs to time to 1/10 of a second as you don't even know whether it's 15.6 for 25.6 seconds so it's only to stand out. But achieving a power reserve of 60 hours is impressive.

 

Not really at that price point. You can get any Swatch Group watch with a Powermatic 80 for $1k or so (and they have a regular running seconds to boot)!

Plus, even a movement maker as shoddy as TAG can do 80 hours these days, for less than what Zenith's charging here.

I've gotta say, now that it's been a full day, the more I look at this new Defy I don't really care for it. Think I'd solve the want for something like this with a PRX and pocket the extra $7000+

At least they have them….didn’t see a Mens Rolex anywhere……

 

The reason I thought it is impressive is that I was under the impression that a higher bph needs more power reserve. Wouldn't a Speedmaster 1861 have a lower power reserve than 40-ish hours if the bph would be 5hz instead of 3hz?

My Carrera cal 360 chronograph module can run for 90 min at 50hz (albeit in a subdial), the Zenith Defy 21 chronograph can only run for 50 min at 50hz. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Defy skyline, having the 1 rotation per 10 seconds subdial, uses more power therefore getting 60 hours PR is impressive.

 

The small second is a good idea and technically worthy. However when I see it in videos I don’t know why but I’m automatically holding my breath. It destroyed my appeal for the watch. May be I’ll change my mind when seeing it for real.
