Hi guys. I'm just curious to hear what you mean is the correct definition of a pre-moon Speedmaster? I see so many different answers to this question. -Some say it has to be a cal. 321 in order to qualify as a pre-moon. -Some say it has to be produced (or at least assembled at Omega) before 20 July 1969 to qualify. (People with an 145.022-69 typically get an Excerpt from the Omega Archives in order to determine this.) -Some say that any Speedmaster with a (correct) pre-moon caseback without the words "first watch..." is defined as a pre-moon Speedmaster. This means that a 145.022-69 produced in December 1970 qualifies as a pre-moon Speedmaster as long as it has the case back pictured below. What is your opinion on this? Regards, Arvid
That's a pre moon. Pre moon refers to the caseback in that it lacks the NASA inscription. The earliest c861 watches are pre moon, as are all earlier ones.
Perhaps it is the model that was available prior to the model that was taken to the moon.(105.003) I am only a casual follower of speedmasters so not really sure, no doubt your questions will be answered soon.
In 17 years of collecting Speedmasters I've always understood it to mean any Speedmaster with a pre moon case back. I doubt you'll find many arguments to the contrary.
Looks like you probably have the answer. I for one consider the case back with Hippocampus as the pre-moon as well.
My speedmaster comes with a hippocampus case back, cal 861.On the strap, we lear N°13,1039,3 71,516. When this watch was made? Thanks.
A man is found in the desert, dead. In his hand is half a match. How did he get there, and how did he die?
I would agree. Along with being assembled before July 20 1969. I would consider a watch that meets both of these criteria to be a premoon speedmaster.
Sorry but this question is a stupid as the people asking from when can you qualified a watch "vintage"...
By reading this I initially thought that are some kind of engraved geographical coordinates... but looking at the pictures I got what you mean Your watch seems to be a 145.022-69, so probably assembled in late 1969 or 1970. For further details we need the serial number of the movement. For that someone who knows what he's doing has to remove the caseback.
Btw... as said before by others... Pre Moon means actually prior "bla bla on the Moon bla bla" engraving. Regardless of the production date.
I bought my watch in a store 30 years ago.(New old stock).Rarely worn. How was the back on a 1971 model?Hippocampus or moon watch engraved? The watch will be open next week. Thanks.
Personally I would say any watch produced before 20/07/1969. However I am a literal person. Within collecting circles I believe that it refers to the case back.
Maybe slightly off the thread, but I think that all Speedmasters are post moon, because the moon had already been there long before they were produced.
