Actually, the "Griffes" design (claws on the right and left of the dial) came out in 1982.

Roman numerals are not a rigid system in which one representation is Right and all other representations are Wrong. IIII is a perfectly acceptable way to write 4. Many, many clock and watch faces take advantage of the longer representation of IIII, for visual balance with the VIII on the other side of the dial.

Regarding Roman numerals, despite the fact that some established and respected watch makers use IIII for 4, I learned only one way to indicate 4; IV. Admittedly, I attended a DoD school in Rota 46 years ago when learning Roman numerals, so they may have missed the mark. Nevertheless, I am going to continue to believe IV is the only correct way to indicate 4.......at least for the time being.

Both are correct. You seldom see IIII though, IV is the most commonly used, specially if it is part of a larger number.

The subtractive notation (IV instead of IIII) only became popular from the 13th century on, so was rarely used in ancient Rome.

While one can continue to believe what they want, be careful where you say it because the Swiss cartels have an extended reach, and may come after you if you deviate from the official Swiss doctrine...

The fact that they read these forums is good though. It can only help the re-editions and the way they service vintage Omegas......
