Never really liked the Daytona. This is coming from a Rolex fanboy. The design just doesn't look like a tool watch as much as the Speedy does. Speedy has nicer (twisted!) lugs, nicer indicies, nicer subdials, nicer bezel, nicer pushers..the only thing the Daytona has going for it (IMHO) is hype.

After recent events I kind of find the thread title inappropriate🙁.

The Daytona is a fine timepiece, it looks good on anyone's wrist, and it is a solid investment (it won't lose value and will likely have some upward appreciation). I never screw the pushers down, there is no need to do so unless you are taking it into the water and I don't take these types of watches swimming. So why anyone is running around with the pushers screwed down and complaining he has to unlock them to use the chrono isn't thinking on a practical level. The Speedmaster is a fine timepiece, too, but technically isn't as up to date as the Daytona, imo. They are both good, no need to bash one or the other. Room for both in a collection.

The new gold panda Speedmaster looks great, but you probably will be able to score a gold Daytona easier for the next couple of years.

The gold dialed variant is $1,700 more than the green-dialed variant when on bracelet, but $1,800 more when on rubber strap vs. the green-dialed’s leather.

👎

So, $1,700 is the price of the gold dial, and $100 is the inexplicable premium for having moon craters inside the rubber strap?

The Au750 on the dial is an interesting flourish

A solid gold Rolex is hard to argue with.

I wouldn't argue with an inanimate object generally...but if I did I would call it ugly, 'cause it is...

I am not a Rolex fanboi and not a rolex hater either - I have 4 of them, 2 vintage, 2 modern steel sport ones that I had to patiently wait for... Still the Daytona has always been meh to me, even when they were available at RRP or below. I just don't get it. The off-center dials, the thick-as-a-brick bezel, I've never ever gotten it and probably never will... which is better like that as I can spend the money on many other more attainable ones instead.

Those gold "colored" speedies, though 🥰🥰... a bit out of my reach unfortunately, plus you can't deny that, just like the Stella Dial AT's, there's a bit of design vampirism here from Omega (same for the Zenith Chronomaster, also).

Having said that - to each his own. Enjoy your toys in good health yall!

Yes, of course - to me it's ugly.

Personal preferences on looks aside, the Daytona has screw down pushers which is functionally retarded for a chronograph. Want to time something, oh wait have to unscrew the pushers. Leave them unscrewed all the time you say? Then it's simply ugly.

How about water resistance protection due to screw down pushers? Nope, if that's important then get a watch where the pushers can be used while submersed.

So, how did the Daytona respond when you called it ugly? Did it call you a rambling idiot?
Sorry, Daytona has an opinion too. But don't worry, I got your back girl.

What about the price difference of the deployant buckle vs. tang buckle?!👎
These are in gold, no?

Not that the pricing differences make any more sense still, but an excellent point I’d missed regarding the gold dial strap version being rubber+deployant, while the green dial strap version being leather+buckle.

If anything, I’m only now more confused about the pricing differences - especially given @YY77 ’s clarification of the stand-alone price difference in deployant vs buckle.

Green vs. Gold, both on bracelets: only known significant difference is dial composition (green PVD vs 18K gold) = $1,700 difference

Green vs. Gold, both on straps: known differences besides dial composition are leather+$630 buckle vs rubber+$3,300 deployant = $1,800 difference

So for the strap versions, it kind of makes it seem like either the green dial folks are getting significantly overcharged to end up with a pin buckle for only $100 discount, or instead the gold dial folks are getting a significant perk getting the deployant for only $100 more?

Just FYI - both of these Speedmasters use the same deployant buckle...

But there's substantially more gold (and work) in a deployant buckle compared to a tang buckle.

LOL, I didn't realize that Archer was a girl. It must be her husband in her avatar. 😗

Not that it matters, really. Well, OK, it probably matters to him. 😉

Anyway...

I've owned two Speedmasters, and two Daytonas. I own neither now, for various reasons.

I prefer the smaller size of the Daytona, as I have small, child-like waif wrists. Well, child-like except for all of the hair. But I could never tell what time it was (see "invisible handset" above). The Omega was super easy to read, classic, iconic, etc. and I will likely buy another one, one of these days. Daytona, not. Not even if I could get one. Not even if I could get one at the same price as a Speedy.

Sorry for the dunce clarification: the website seemed to suggest that, in the strap iterations of either model, one comes on deployant (gold dial) while the other comes on simple tang (green dial)

Understanding correctly from you that both strap iterations for either model come instead on deployant?

Yes, they both come on a deployant according to the Extranet.
