Datejust Dial Hijinks

Hi All,

I’m thinking about purchasing a 5-digit Datejust, but I’m pretty set on a blue dial which I know narrows my choices and bumps up the price.

There seem to be a fair bit of legit 5-digit datejust dials available on eBay, including blue. What’s the downside to me purchasing a nice 5-digit Datejust on eBay, and separately purchasing a 5-digit Datejust dial in blue to swap in? Of course I would keep the original dial in storage, but I’m wondering if any authentic 5-digit Datejust dial would fit.

Also the OCD part of me wonders if the replacement dial would be out of place in some way, for example did blue dial models originally come out with some variation of model number?

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Back then, you could buy a DJ in the store and pick the dial you wanted them to drop in. There’s no problem swapping out an era-correct dial for another one. And any competent watchmaker can easily swap it. Just be sure you’re buying a correct one.

Fascinating, thanks. I had no idea you could pick and choose your dial when purchasing new back then.

Like the others said be very wary of 'legit' dials particularly on eBay, I've personally been burnt before!

In some cases, even the seller actually just doesn't know they're selling a redial or a fake. Rolex fakes industry has gotten so good it's difficult to tell nowadays.
