Longines tells me that this was shipped in 1943. I suspect that the old man was given it when I was born since I'm pretty sure he didn't buy it cuz I doubt that he had anything like money to drop on a Longines. He wore it for decades. I can't remember him not wearing it until sometime in the '90s when it finally quit running and he went electric. It came to me after he passed away a couple yrs ago. I had it repaired and contacted Longines about its age. It keeps fine time so I stuck the bracelet on it and my wife wears it a few days a week. anyway - still cranking away after near 73 years hahaha
With the watch set to the minute the bezel is rotated to where the second hand is zero on the minute. The piece could then be used for navigation in a better fashion than would be the case w/out the second setting. Well, that was the intent anyway the way I heard it.
Amazing piece and history. Wear it in the bet of health! Btw if you think it's a little small to be worn, my trick is to wear it on a bund strap to "beef" up on the overall appearance on the size
