Customs lost my Connie caseback… 168.005 gold & stainless case.

Customs managed to lose the case back for my 168.005, which is an 18k cap & stainless piepan Constellation… does anyone have one with the gold/brass logo on the back, or am I stuck with a stainless 168.004 or 168.010 version? I’m in no rush, but I’d love to get this thing back together since it’s a very nice original watch 😢

Btw… I know the hands are incorrect… that’s one of the things I plan on correcting…

That does not appear to be a 168.005.
It’s supposed to have the recessed crown, which has been replaced with a standard one so it sticks out more than it should. I bought it to correct the few issues it’s got, but the caseback is now the biggest issue 😕

IIRC, a 168.005 has dog-leg lugs. Perhaps you meant to type a different reference number?

To be honest, I can’t recall the exact ref… maybe is it a 168.004 or 168.010? I’m so mad at them for not taking the 5 seconds to reset the back properly. This is frustrating… and thank you for noticing the lug difference

What width is the strap on your watch @Maddiecaddy ?
It could be a 168.010.
Lug width :
18mm = 168.004
19mm = 168.010

You can get a replacement crown for both ‘hidden crown’ Constellations that sits inside the crown recess, it still sticks out a little but will look better than the current crown you have on there and will be waterproof.

I would imagine finding a loose caseback - either for SS or gold cap will require equal patience - but first you need to determine the case reference.

If it is an .004 you will need to find a caseback from the same case manufacturer as they differ slightly. (Difficult to do if you don’t have the caseback to ascertain the manufacturer)

BTW IIRC gold cap cases are 14k not 18k.
As are the medallions on the caseback.

I’ll check the strap width

If it would be the 168.004 then the replacement crown should have part number 42050. I got one in rose gold from @No Mercy quite a while ago to have a backup for my original one that already lost its plating.

It's the same replacement crown for both .004s and .010s (obviously, yellow gold in the OP's case)

This is really unfortunate. So you think that a customs agent opened the back of the watch and then misplaced the case-back. TBH, I would never have imagined that customs would actually open up a watch. That seems incredibly risky.

It was in place when it was sent (along with other watches), and was completely missing when the package arrived… so someone in the customs process managed to lose it.

The correct hands will be dauphine hands for a pie pan dial, with black painted insert.
These should be available to a watchmaker with a parts account.

Wow that is terrible, really crazy. I've never heard of anything like that happening, such bad luck.

If it is a 168.004 it should have Chamfered edge on the lugs like mine.
The PP’s watch had a polished case - but there are two bezel types on the .004 depending on the manufacturer.
One with a larger angled facet, the other with a wider flat plain.
Both .004s and .010s have chamfered lugs.
