I am sure that this question must have been asked before, but I can't find the thread if it has Are the crowns on solid gold Omegas just gold-plated, or are they also solid YG or RG like the case? I am thinking of top of the line models, like Constellation Deluxe and Grande Luxe. Thanks in advance
They have a layer of gold on steel. Gold alone wouldn't be strong enough to hold up to the wear & tear put on a crown.
And of course, they're not just one piece, are they? Quite complicated little beasts with an outer decorative shell pressed over a serrated inner core, which in turn has an inserted water-proof seal.
Hi John, I aksed this same question on April 6th and got (the same) answers from Focus and from Gator. I asked because I have an old 18 kt connie with its original crown that does not show any wear. So I was wondering if it was all gold. Once removed, like Focus said, I can see it is a pretty thick gold capped crown with a space to hold the seal and a stem that is screwed in. I told the service people I wanted it put back after service, which they did.
Here are some shown in various stages of decrepitness, from completely naked down to the core and merely worn.
Might be a stupid question, but is there some standards when it come to the thread type in Crowns (size, metric or inch, left or right)? I might need to do one myself, so it would be nice to know, what I'm up against
You can find an essay and a list of vintage omega crown details on Desmonds blog http://omega-constellation-collectors.blogspot.ch/2009/01/omega-constellation-crowning-glories.html
