Good story. To the many experts here… what approximate year is the Speedmaster? Screenshot from the Fratello story.

It’s at most 4 years, since this is new 3861 saphire.

No matter what year it is, you can take it to the Antarctic, but keep it the heck away from any snowblowers.

Really interesting and well-written article. I wish it had covered the Speedy’s use in navigation more deeply:
The Omega Speedmaster was the watch that Messner took on this great journey. Apparently, he used it to aid with navigation.
I wonder why the Speedmaster was chosen for the expedition; presumably, the chronograph was useful for something.

Interestingly, both Apollo 11 moonwalkers have visted the poles...
A11 CMP Edwin Aldrin has visited both North- & South Pole (1998 & 2016), becoming the oldest man to have done so.
Aldrin wore Omega on both occasions....
A11 Commander Neil Armstrong visited the North Pole with Sir Edmund Hillary in April 1985 ! Armstrong might have worn his Gold BA 145.022-69 although difficult to see in photographs...
