Just received this today, it's only a cosmic but it virtually untouched, it still had the sticker on the case back, which has left an ugly mess, what is the best way to clean this without me leaving it full of scratches? Also, the gaurantee is dated 1989 but these were made in the '60's this strikes me as as odd, any ideas? Lastly, how old does it have to be to be vintage? Should I have put this in modern?

Do not use a razor or other blade, it will scratch it.

Did you try rubbing alcohol? I think WD40 might also work.

    Perhaps rubbing alcohol?

In the automotive world, we use Goo Gone, but I am not sure how that would react to stainless steel.

    Thanks ;)
I have done some very stupid things in my time (ie bidding $318 on an awful franken that brought me here in the first place) but I'd like to think I am no longer as silly as to try this

Advice from one of the vintage dealers on removing the goo from stickers:

You can try WD-40 or mineral oil. If that is not easily done, I would suggest alcohol swabs or nail polish remover.

I like WD40, let it soak for 10 minutes or so, then use your fingernail to gently scrape the goo off. You will likely need a couple applications, be patient!

Liquid car wax will dissolve the adhesive without scratching the back. You might need a couple of applications to get it all off. Brasso would probably work also.

I'd stay away from WD-40. Don't think it can do damage to the back, but might leave you with a gooey mess on your hands.

Alcohol or acetone might damage the crystal and gaskets.

    Hope this helps,

My advice is to leave well enough alone unless you are planning to wear the watch. If not then keep it in as found condition.

Take the watch head and suspend in 2 liters of hydrochloric acid for 12 hours. All of the sticker residue will be gone :D

Or there a product called "Goo Gone" that is especially made for this kind of job.
