Hello All,

I'm contemplating the purchase of a Seamaster 300M with the white face ( 210.30.42.20.04.001 ).

I just wanted to see if anyone here has one and their thoughts on it in general.

More specifally in terms of legibility of the hands against the white Zifferblat (I am approaching 50 and the eyes are not what they used to be, I am near-sighted by default, but need different glasses for reading and driving, and I hate bifocals. I find high-contrast dials easy to read, especially my Zenith with a champagne face and black hands, even though it is a tiny 34mm, I can read it with and without both sets of glasses).

Thanks in advance !

I recently got one. After debating color options, the high legibility of the white was a big plus - and one of the reasons I chose it. The dark hands stand out well against the white dial, and the waves on the dial are more subtle than the other colors I looked at. It’s also a less shiny dial, which also helps with legibility for me personally. Overall it has a less “busy” look than the black, for example, and I highly recommend it.

I have owned a few of the white dial SMP. Legibility is excellent. The watch is also excellent in toto. I highly recommend it.

If legibility is paramount and you like the colour combo, I would rather go with the Tokyo Olympics SMP.

While the black and white combo is good from a legibility point of view, depending on light condition and angles, the hands will ghost out a bit (turn light grayish) while the Tokyo Olympics will turn a lighter shade of blue, but more legible in my opinion. The below pic is a bit overexposed but should convey the idea

I have the Tokyo Olympics SMP and have no problems with legibility.
The indicices are a slightly creamy white and the dial is a slightly grey white (similar to the difference illustrated in Farrowla's photo), there is also a dark blue outer to all the indices which becomes more noticable at oblique viewing angles. The hands generally appear dark blue, almost black, but give a flash of electric blue under strong light.
I think you'll be fine with a white face.

Thanks everyone for your replies!

I do like the SMP Tokyo Olympics, especially the blue bezel and hands. I just looked and those are hard to come by and a lot more expensive used compated to the regular SMP White new, so a bit outside my budget.

I wouldn’t put you off the regular white dial as both have similar levels of contrast but mentioned the Tokyo as I’ve obviously got a lot more experience with it.
Not sure where you live but I bought my Tokyo here in the UK last year for around 75% of the new price of the white. Prices on them seem to be all over the place with Japan the cheapest, Europe a little more expensive and the states a lot more. If you want one, you may have to wait for the right deal as they only made 2020 pieces.
Or just buy the white.
Good luck.

I really like mine. Very legible, it looks good on a wide variety of straps, and the waves on the dial are quite subtle - the light has to hit it just right. Most of the time the waves are invisible. Plus, it doesn’t look like every other “sub-Submariner” diver out there - it’s a really sharp watch. And it’s +/- 0.0 dead nuts accurate.

The usual advice: buy it on the bracelet and ask them to throw in the excellent rubber strap. Then have fun with NATOs!

It’s the only watch I took to Italy a couple years ago. Here we are on the beach at Cinque Terre. I bought this NATO from the very pretty ladies at the Omega Boutique in Florence. I’m easy like that, but I also deserved a cool souvenir.

I don't know where you live but this is in the US for $5975.

The US Omega website quotes a price of $5900 for the standard white dial (would that have additional sales tax?).

I bought one for a family member a while who loves it -- it's a beautiful and surprisingly versatile variant and my favourite of this generation of SMP Divers (I've owned blue, black, green and Tokyo). I actually prefer it to the Tokyo overall, but both are terrific.

Great white dials are hard to come by. IMO the SMP is one of the very best, and the waves treatment on this one never gets the striated or "fractured" look of some other variants, even in bright sunlight, where it tends to silver.

I also own the white Seamaster Diver 300M. Like others have noted above, I find mine highly legible. Mine gets a lot of wrist time. Recent pic below. 😀

Mine is the most legible piece I own, by far, in every scenario but dead of night (the Balls with Tritium take that prize):
I've got mine on an OEM leather deployant strap and I love it:

Thanks for the link, that indeed looks very nice but prefer to buy locally. I am in Europe.

I have spoken to an Omega dealer (not the Boutique) and they are offering 20% off the price quoted from Omega, so it ends up being +/- 4800 new.

I paid for £4500 for my Tokyo last year but it did take about 3-4 months of looking.
I suspect you could get a a Tokyo for €4500-5000 but if you want an SMP today then go ahead and buy the white with 20% off.

That is a great deal. Have the older Seamaster GMT "Great White" and one of my favorites for the summertime, very versatile on different straps to change up the looks and goes with just about everything. Picked up the White dial Speedmaster a couple of months ago or I would've picked the Seamaster up. Definitely a winner of a dial and watch.

As far as white dials, this is the best in the game. Looks incredible in person.

I have the black dial, but it was a close contest.

I’ve handled it a few times and legibility is no problem.

This may or not matter to you but in my experience the white dial SMP is slightly softer in the secondary market vs the blue or black. It seems to attract maybe $200-250 less at resale. I'm not certain about the grey version but I suspect it is more like the white than black in this regard. It wouldn't stop me buying one at all, but it is worth bearing in mind when you buy as they may be more inclined to discount the white one if it is a slower seller then the darker colours, and I suspect it is. The 2023 Summer blue still seems strong.
