Hi Everyone I have recently inherited my late father Omega watch, its a Constellation as seen in the pictures. It works perfectly even though its never been used for about 2 years From what I have been able to find out from my family, its was bought in the late sixties. As I don't have the correct tool to remove the back, I cannot obtain any serial numbers to confirm this. I think its Calibre 564 with 24 jewels. I have yesterday taken it to a professional watch mender to have it serviced - not cheap! One question I wanted to ask everyone is about watch winders. As the watch is an automatic, could anyone recommend a watch winder (silent running one), as Ive been told a mechanical watch should be kept running all the time to avoid problems. Also does anyone know which direction the weight turns in this watch to enable it to wind up. Sorry for the silly questions, as I am new to omega watches cheers Alam
Welcome @Alan0062 Sorry for your loss - the Constellation will be a nice memento for you. If you haven’t already - tell the watchmaker not to polish the watch or replace the hands or touch the dial. But do have them photograph the movement and case back for future reference. (The serial and case numbers) A service, depending on where you are, should be around $2-300 or £200. + parts if required. The rotor is bi-directional - so winds both ways. +1 on not using a winder on a vintage watch.
Thanks for the replies and information, I was unaware that a watch winder could potentially damage the watch inside?, I thought the more expensive ones had a gentle motion. But this is why I joined this forum to learn. The service by the way is £230 plus any parts that maybe required.
That price sounds okay. But as I said, do instruct the watchmaker clearly. I presume you’ve seen the C case thread? some great watches and links to info on your Constellation.
Ive instructed the watchmaker of your comments, he informs me the serial number is CD 168 017 SP. Does anyone have a rough idea of the value of this watch for insurance purposes?
that's the case number ie watch reference. the serial movement is on the movement and will help date the watch. we could do with sharper pictures to assess condition for value purposes
Just got my watch back from being serviced. Apart from a little wear on the manual windup, all seems to be ok, dates from around 1971. No 33062454
Looks great. You're going to enjoy wearing it. Did your watchmaker replace all seals and pressure test?
