Hi there! First post here so apologies if this is not posted in the right place! So as we know there are many many Pie Pans with repainted black dials but I can’t seem to find anywhere which states which references originally had black dials and which references should never have a black dials. At least this way you know even if it’s a redial that it is the correct colour for that watch. Thanks in advance,
A better question might be “who has the earliest reference with a black pie pan” After that all subsequent references are likely to be possible - until they stopped producing pie-pan dials.
well that's a good start - but where are the pics? the OP did particularly specify pie-pans but I suspect that black dials have been a long-available variation - including pie pans
It’s not a pie pan, missed that point... sorry to mess with OP request But since you asked, pics available here : https://omegaforums.net/threads/wruw-today.567/page-4780#post-969727
Interesting subject, but why are you interested @HairspringHarry? Are you specifically looking after a black dialed Constellation and want to eliminate references from your search? I would rather just judge each black dialed specimen by itself and look for signs of redialing. Since there is such a huge variety of Constellations (just think of the seventies ultra-thins or the quartz versions), it would help that you narrowed your search down a bit. FWIW, I don't think that there are references from the fifties or sixties other than the Luxe/Grand Luxe/Asian Jumbos/etc. that weren't available with a black dial; common varieties such as the 14.XXX-series or the 165.XXX ought to have been available in black. There are also concerns about texture, brushing and so on that are defining features of dial finishing.
In the day you could order a black dial, so hard to actually pin all models with black dials. Many threads if you search
Okay thanks so much much for your replies! So really it's safe to say most Pie pans were probably produced with black dial variations. It's just a matter of checking for the standard signs of redialling. I didn't upload pics as it was just a general question and not about a specific watch. Thanks again!
@HairspringHarry The black dial constellation or seamaster is known as the newbie trap. Hundreds of worn out dialled $250 watches with dials spruced up and painted black to be passed off at $1000 watches. We see many a noob with a first post asking about a black dialled vintage Omega. Happy to help authenticate if you need. Post a clear picture preferred than links
Impossible to say you need to post better quality photos. No point keep adding photos using the same camera as it’s obviously not good enough.
It's been a good while since I last saw the Online Omega Database, but I seem to recall my black dial 168.005 being referred to as having a "Deluxe Dial". EDIT: Found it! My memory didn't let me down. https://web.archive.org/web/2014103...data-watch/omega/caliber-5/cal-561/st-168-005
