Hi all, I’ve a stainless steel Constellation 168.017 with a correct cal 561 movement. The movement serial number is 20731723 which, according to an online tool, maps to a 1963 year of production.

Grateful if someone could confirm that this information is correct for this watch, i.e. does 2073… map to 1963 and, if so does 1963 fall into the known production run for the 168.017?

Picture of the watch below - watch has recently been serviced and unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of the movement.

I think your research is correct and you are right to be concerned about the date of the movement.

According to Omega, the Ref. 168.0017 was introduced in 1967:

https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-constellation-c-st-168-0009-168-0017

However, the Old Omegas website has a German Catalog from 1964 that has this model in steel.

Whether an early version of this model would contain a 1963 dated movement is anyone’s guess. Only Omega would know and as of today, they are not telling.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, that’s very helpful. Interesting to see the 1964 catalogue. I know with Speedmasters there instances of batches of earlier movements being used with later watches. As you say, unfortunately the EOA service can’t be used to provide a conclusive answer.

I wonder if the date of ‘64 for the catalogue is correct?

The C-cases have some strange early dates but that shouldn’t include the 168.017.

And whilst there were 168.004s(/14s) around in 64’, that wouldn’t include 168.010s(/11s).

Well, this thread had me reaching for my iPad - since I have two 168.017s, both with 561 movements and both with 1966 serial numbers commencing 23* and 24*.

Just a query @gatorcpa - the initial enquiry was about 168.017 but your response referred to

‘According to Omega, the Ref. 168.0017 was introduced in 1967’.

Was it a typo or have I missed something? 😀

To use the Omega Database, there has to be 4 digits to the right of the decimal. For earlier models, this means that you need to add an extra zero.
