I think my fondness for hidden-crown round-cased Connies is well known by now. I've a small clutch of 168.010s but I've never been able to land a 168.004 - until now. This rather nice pie-pan .04 Connie came up yesterday and to my delight I managed to bag it. Nice sharp case, original hidden crown, with a little bubbling on the dial -but I can put up with that. It is, however, something of a hybrid anomaly and has a few quirks that might interest folks. - especially if, like me, you followed these old threads with valuable input from @hoipolloi amongst others. https://omegaforums.net/threads/help-identify-this-constellation.57205/ https://omegaforums.net/threads/comepare-dial-168-004.23535/ First of all it's rather late for an .04 - sold in '67 but it does have a corresponding 24,29xxx serial. Secondly, it has a quite 'sharp-edged' pie-pan dial not usually associated with an .04, which are generally considered to be softer. Thirdly, it is SS but has a brickwork observatory, again more usually associated with the later .010 version rather than an .04 Finally, and possibly most unusually, it's powered by a cal 564, not the usual 561 movement.
Edited with additional pics. In my enthusiasm, I hadn't added the images of the quickset date instruction booklet with 168.004 typewritten on the front - and most importantly the original hangtag, which is stapled to the back of the guarantee papers, showing the reference, serial number and the 564 cal designation. Proof positive that 168.004s did indeed come with the quickset date movement - a great thing to have given the uncertainty of the provenance of previous .04s posted with 564s. 370 Gilders in 1967 -it's always nice to see what these watches cost when they first went on sale.
A great find and a true evidence of how fragmented our knowledge on Constellations really is Of course it was resident expert @Peemacgee who found this!
Been away from forum for sometime during holiday. Coming back and see @Peemacgee and his Connie. And watch itself still looks sharp!
The pie-pan and the hidden crown does take some visual adjustment on my part. Very interesting! Congrats! And thanks @Shabbaz for the extra context.
Interesting you should say this. I had the same problem and passed on a really nice pie pan .010 a couple of years ago that would have been a bargain now. But I’m cured now.
