Y'all finally got me interested in the looks of the Moonwatch, but I just don't want to wear something that large. Because I'm interested in the looks and not the NASA connection, the Reduced seems to be a good alternative, especially if I get the latest version with the less cluttered dial. I also consider the 10 bar water resistance, sapphire crystal, and self-winding movement bonuses. YMMV. So aside from higher service costs, what downsides am I missing in considering this model? Thanks in advance

Higher service costs are the main drawback, its not even that they're so high, its that the street price of a used one is so low that the service cost isn't much less than the purchase cost.

Really? I see 3510.50 a dime a dozen...well, around the prices you mention. But the later 3539.50 like this one seems way more scarce and selling in the range of $2200 to 2500 judging from the completed sales I've found. Find me one of these in this condition for $1200, and I'm all over it!

If your one and done, then maybe. If you plan to hang out on this site you will very quickly realize you should have bought a speedy professional.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday and decided to pass at that price. Glad I asked you folks. I was beginning to think this sapphire version had some sort of cult following. I was going to offer the seller of the pictured watch a real world value, but I'm sure he'd just reject it. He's making a big deal over the features different from the 3510. The thing is, I actually agree with him, but oh well... Thanks all.

You could choose one of the mk40 speedys with the valjoux movement, they all had sapphire crystals and a very good automatic movement. These come with a date or even triple date and they aren't much bigger. Here's a triple date with as many hands as an octopus [IMG]

I'd second that recommendation, the Speedmaster Date and Speedmaster MK40 are both superb options in the automatic Speedmaster with sapphire crystal segment.

LOL! Funny you should mention it. One of those octopi is on my wrist right now - a white dial COSC model I bought new at a boutique. Now that was a mistake!

Just heard from the seller. It's a grey market watch he bought used and has no service history. But...wait for it................
"runs strong and keeps time." I'll bet his uncle checked it out.

Dude get a Pro. Its the only watch in everybody's top 10, and for all sorts of reasons.

Agreed, get the Pro. If you go with the reduced there is a very high likelihood you will ultimately wish it was the Pro.

Your octopus is a real nice watch, maybe not the traditional colour scheme but a fine looking watch in its own right. My advice is get a moonwatch but if you don't like the size get the speedy reduced you won't go wrong either way.

Guys. I'm not trying to be a contrarian. I'm sure they're wonderful, but I'm just not interested... and for all sorts of reasons. Hey, somebody has to buy all those lesser and not-worthy watches. Right? As they say in the car biz, there's an ass for every seat.
