Considering a Grand Seiko SBGM221 - thoughts from long term

I’m considering adding a SBGM221 to my collection.

For me, the appeal is that it feels like one of GS genuinely iconic designs: the warm ivory dial, the excellent case and hands finishing, and the crisp contrast of its blued GMT hand.

I also like that it has its own GMT language, without falling in the usual Rolex bezel template.

My main hesitation, though, is the 13.7mm thickness, particularly on my 15.5cm wrist. While the lug-to-lug seems manageable, I’m concerned it may sit too tall and feel top-heavy over time. Also, the thickness seems particularly unwarranted, given the splash resistant case.

I’d very interested in hearing long-term ownership experience. Thanks!!

16.5 cm here. I tried this watch in person. Too thick and too big lug-to-lug for my taste. Not heavy tho.
I have thicker watches and they work for me, eg. PO.
I strongly suggest to try it in person before buying.

I really love the look and finish of this watch, however, after 3 years of ownership, I recently sold mine, I just stopped wearing it. It does wear high on the wrist and I found the GMT dial too busy. I think the SBGW 231 would have suited me better.

As appealing as the SBGM221 is in terms of dial and identity, I think the thickness would be simply too much for me.

The case proportions do feel incongruous with the elegant character that otherwise this watch is trying to convey.
