Patek Philippe is being regarded as one of the most prestigious watch companies from Switzerland. This always has been the case. Their – often – wealthy clients are located all over the world and among them are royals and captains of industry. It is a brand with one of the best-known slogans, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.”. Whether this is true or not, does not matter, owners of a Patek Philippe watch or future buyers of a Patek Philippe watch gladly refer to this slogan to justify their expensive timepiece. In this article we compare a vintage Nautilus 3700/1A with a modern Nautilus 5711/1A.

Trev's actually a big fan of the 5712, personally its not entirely my cup of tea, I'd still go a 15202 over it even if they were the same price.

3700/1 all the way 🍿

🤔 seems the only practical thing is to buy both of them.

To be honest, I've handled both for this article and couldn't decide (even though I am not in the market). What I do know, is that the AP RO 15202 always has been one of my favorite watches (and I bought one a few years ago), and since I have that one, I thought I "needed" a Nautilus as well. The next holy Grail, so to speak.

Well, I tried the Nauts a couple of times (also for a couple of days) and I was quite amazed that when it comes to wearing, I prefer the AP. The Nautilus is a bit more 'flimsy' on the wrist than a 15202 (or 5402/14802/15200) and the case and bracelet are not as nicely integrated as with the AP. Also, I prefer the movement inside the 15202 over the caliber 324SC in the 5711/1A. I like the PP 28-255 and AP cal 2121 better.

The dial on the 5711/1A has a nicer 'color' to it than the 3700/1A. It is more 'alive'. However, the printing and location of the date of the 3700/1A is nicer. However, the bracelet on the 5711/1A is nicer. And so on. You should actually buy the two of them...

This is a really great comparison. Thanks for posting it.

PP Nautilus kinda is my grail. I think they both look great and I would be very proud to own either of them (or both for that matter).

Here's my bad scan of my PP 3800/1 "daily beater" that I wore for a couple of decades. Loved it ;-)
