    hey guys,

I have a few 321's. On one of them, I think it's exhibiting chrono creep - not a big deal, it will get fixed.

BUT, i notice that when the chronograph is engaged on this one, the hour recorder hand seems to run fast. When the minute recorder is at, say 28 minutes, the hour recorder is already at 1 hour.

is this normal for a watch with chrono creep? or is this something else?

    feedback appreciated!

Is it already starting at 30 min though?

even if i reset it to zero, then start the chrono, the hour recorder still seems to be running fast and will be at 1 hour when the minute recorder is only at 30 minutes... very odd.

Sorry, might have been my phrasing. Is the hour recorder only resetting to somewhere near the 30 minute mark? Or is it resetting back to 0 properly and then running fast?

I've had one in the past that would only reset about halfway between the 0 and 1 hour mark, and running the chrono would just advance it whatever the real time was + 30 min. Nothing that a service wouldn't fix.

ah, yeah, resets to zero properly. left in just time keeping mode, the hour recorder creeps.

reset the chrono to 0, then start it and the hour recorder runs fast, like almost double time as near as i can tell.

i'm sure a quick service will fix it, just wondering if it's a symptom of the same problem or something else entirely. mostly just out of curiosity...

Are you counting 30 mins as 1 hour?

    No, that's the thing.

Starting with all counters at 0. By the time the minute recorder gets to 30, the hour recorder is at 1. So it's like the hour recorder is running double time.

May I be the first to suggest that your watchmaker has installed an extra cog?

You may have been abducted by aliens.
    You may have been probed.
The hour register gets its power from the mainspring so this sounds odd.

That would explain it. Off for servicing (once I get a couple others back!)

Try running again with the crown pointing up, it'll probably slow down ;)

By the way, I think "chronocreep" would make a great nom de plume/handle!

I think this is listed in the forum by-laws, under rodent care, but,
All watches affected by Aliens should be sent to the Home Office for investigation.

Where's the Department of Uncles fit into all this? Beaurocracy is a concept I've never been able to grasp

The problem may happen and it is generally related to the wear of the teeth of the hour recorder runner and of the pinion mounted over the barrel arbor. In a certain sense it might be due to the same causes which lead to the chrono creep, albeit it is a different problem.
