My wife and I are going on a Christmas trip to Berlin on Sunday for a week (a sort of late wedding anniversary treat). I think this has probably been asked in a previous thread, but as we have not been before I am looking for any recommendations members may have on must see sights, eating out, shopping areas etc. We will be staying pretty centrally, near the Brandenburg Gate, so should be able to get around fairly easily.

    calling @Delbok @mr_yossarian

I was there this past August under perfect and fantastic weather conditions - rented a bike and logged quite a few miles around the city - but December will be a different <brr> ball game. Lots to see...

Work your way through the Christmas markets, making sure to sample the Gluwien in each. Marvellous way to see Berlin.

Depending on your interests there are some fantastic museums and churches, a bike ride through the park (with warm clothes), the Holocaust memorial, and just waling the streets,

We’re staying at the Adlon so may give it a try funds permitting. This is definitely one off my bucket list, I’ve wanted to stay there for years!

    Great destination ;)

What kind of restaurants/bars are you looking for and what kind of mood as well? Berlin is really eclectic so you can have pretty much what you want :)

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Museum Island and the Pergamon. That is definitely worth a visit, although it is currently under construction and the Pergamon Altar is not open. But the Ishtar Gate and other antiquities are spectacular.

I had read that there is a good mix of restaurants and bars in Berlin, just wondering if anyone had any particular recommendations.

I'll leave it up to the locals in general, but if you're interested in Japanese or Korean on a budget then I know a few places.

go for lunch or dinner at the radio tower and enjoy the view - the food was decent. It was near perfect weather when I was there in August..I'd call for reservations...

    :)

Please laugh if you get the reference....

Scott: Let me handle this, I speak better German. Hello!

    Truck Driver: Hello!

Scott: [in German] My German is ill, but I can understand on you if the speaking is slowly.

Truck Driver: [in German] German! I have been driving for 14 hours straight and I haven't slept in three days and I am wired on schnapps, benzedrine, and those little chocolate covered peanuts.

    Cooper: What did he say?

Scott: He said he's driving, something...

Scott: [in German] Do you know where is Berlin?

Truck Driver: [in German] Berlin? Yes, I know it well. I stabbed a woman in a bar in Berlin. But I am going nowhere near Berlin.

    Scott: Berlin!

Truck Driver: [in German] Berlin! I also sexually assaulted a horse in Berlin.

    Scott: He's going to Berlin.

    Jamie: Awesome.

Truck Driver: [in German] Nowhere near Berlin.

Scott: All right, come on, let's go.

[the group get in the back of the truck]

Truck Driver: [to self, in German] I'll drive this truck off a cliff before I ever go back to Berlin.

The self guided tour of the Bundestag dome is worth doing with great views however you do need to pre-register online for a slot.
