Stainless Speedys have been seen gracing the wrists of those in dinner or formal attire even...but what about the reverse? How do you feel about a "traditional" dress watch going casual for the weekend? Does it fly?
A cool watch is always cool IMO, however I would feel a bit out of place with a "formal style 18K watch" with shorts and a T.....
Personally, I have no problem with it visually. But, tt would worry me a bit if I was engaging in any vigorous activities.
The very reasons most guys would not wear a formal watch with shorts and a T, is the very reason you should. It makes a statement and makes people notice....in a subtle way.....for reasons most probably wouldn't know they were noticing. If you are single, you can remove your watch just prior to the ensuing vigorous activities.
I replaced the gator strap on my gold JLC master calendar with a shell cordovan strap to dress it down. It works well. More a classic style than dress watch though. Don't think my 35mm Dress watches would work.
Better to be overdressed than underdressed. Plus, the strap can make a HUGE difference in how formal the watch looks.
One of the reasons I favor slightly larger face watches; in the 40-44 mm range, the dress or causal distinction is somewhat blurred. But ultimately wear what u like!
I don't agree with "better to be overdressed than underdressed", but I live on the west coast. I think our motto is "better to be dressed than not."
I live in Portland, OR which has some of the worst dressed people I have ever seen. Nevertheless, I travel to the beat of a different drummer. To each his own.
Meh.... Black dress socks with sandals .... Not for me. A disdain and lack of any reason to dress up has me collecting sport watches almost exclusively.
I went to my friends wedding in NYC and he stated Business Casual for the reception... Being from Southern California, I knew that means 100% different things to each of us.
Not a fan of gold watches generally, so although I have some dressier watches, they are not gold watches. I wear them with whatever I feel like. I don't pay a lot of attention to dress code type rules...
Except for really thin watches, I just change the strap to dress the watch down and I usually feel I'm good to go. I might stand corrected, but gold bumper SMs were kind of sport watches back in the 50s, no?
