On an otherwise OK 145.022 I saw this caseback that looks to me as if a previous owner has tried to "refresh" the engraving. (he forgot four circles though)
Does anyone have a better explanation than Dremel?

Looks like chatter from working it on a lathe to me, rather than something done with a Dremel.

There was probably a lathe involved initially, but I think OP is talking about someone using a Dremel like an engraver to "redraw" the hippocampus with deeper lines. I don't think they forgot the circles, I think the tip of the engraver was just too large.

Sure looks re-engraved to me. Poor seamonster.

It’s unfortunate that people try to “revive” pieces without knowledge or experience, or better yet, don’t know to leave well enough alone

It was turned on a lathe with a dull cutting tool or the wrong speed.

Yes, that’s definitely how you get chatter...

As a matter of fact that's what I meant. I didn't even notice the chatter @Archer mentioned.Shame on me.
I wonder how much of the original thickness of the back is left.

By the way, the three small circles in the red area survived. Those in the blue area didn't make it.

Anyway, I'll let this one pass.
