Am I right to assume this is a gold hallmark on the side of this de luxe?

And if so, is it correct to assume minimal polishing in the past?

Out of focus. Any hallmarks on back of lugs? that would be usual place. But this may be one.
Look at case, bezel lugs to assess polishing. This does not indicate one way or another.

It's impossible for me to get it in focus and it's hard to see it with a loupe. I just was able to get my hands on a 40's centenary, and it has the same stamp on that side.

My only assumption would be that a hallmark that still existed crisply on a case could indicate signs that it was unpolished.

The watch as a whole looks pretty sharp to me, in comparison to other photos of great examples.

If that is really a 2853 then there are a whole lot of issues.

Case can be significantly polished and still have a hallmark. This one shows no remains of the bevel on the bezel. Lugs are very soft indeed too.

Most importantly, that’s not a 2853 dial. Small second means it’s not even the right movement.

Whatever is going on there gives me a bad feeling.

Are you talking about the centenary I posted second? Or the first watch which is my 2853 de luxe?

I was merely asking what the stamp on the side was? Both my watch (2853) and the omega centenary I posted have it on the case side. I know they are from similar eras and was wondering if it was a hallmark.

He's my 2853 next to it:

Swiss Constellations usually have two hallmarks on the back of the lugs.

Does your watch have these?

Some countries will add a poincon when it is imported.
(The Portuguese like to vandalise watches by whacking a punch mark on the front of a lug for some unknown reason. )

Hallmarks are usually quite clear as they are relatively deep ( compared to, say, a scratch).
So, the presence of a hallmark doesn’t assure a lack of polishing.

It does have a hallmark on the back lug. Seems
Like there's only 1, not two.

It also looks almost exactly like the notch on the side of the case.

Interesting.

I think the location of the hallmarks is not uniform. I have seen some watches with 2 hallmarks on the lights and others with one on the mid-case and another on the back.

So that is in fact a hallmark. I've just been curious what it was.

Thanks!

There is an eight-year gap between the release of the 2500 (Centenary 1948) and the first batch of the Connie 2852/3 (1956). These are clearly two different production eras; they don't belong to the same period at al

Looks like a very nice example to me.

Not related to this reference specifically, but I have also noticed that the lug hallmarks can be either horizontally or vertically stamped.

This is a later watch (167.005) - the stamp is placed vertically. Most often I have seen horizontal stamps.
