i would put this up there with the greatest watch finds ever https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/c...ek-philippe-from-the-1959-24-hours-of-le-mans incredible watch and incredible story
Cool! And a refreshing story from Hodinkee. Not the typical, "Cool Watch Found, Going to Auction" but rather staying in the family.
john reardon formerly of christies wrote the article which i haven't seen before that condition. . incredible same case as movado m90/m95s by the way. .
these didn't attach for some reason i agree. . .i rarely get watch envy but i drool over this and i would wear it
That's a beautiful watch with a very special history. I would wear it - but not out of the house. I'm thinking it would sell at auction for a million usd or more.
And it only took three sentences to find a misrepresentation by Hodinkee! ("Here, we share for the first time the story..")
I somehow think the watch was not a prize handed out by the ACO. I think H wants to try and make this connection, but I am not convinced.
not a doubt in my mind this is a seven figure watch this one is bid 400k although it is double signed https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/...-chronograph-two-tone-dial-retailed-74/108589
I have always admired Carroll Shelby... very few people can achieve the level of success in their chosen field as did Shelby. A true American Icon and a true iconic watch.
Very few people have ever tried to sue the people that made him famous in the first place. Ford in the 80’s and again in the 90's. The Shelby American club which had been around since the 70’s in the 2000’s for using his name (literally the people that made him famous)... A couple of forums that had topics that had his name in them (there where positive no less.) I give you the back end of Pete Brocks personal Superformance Daytona Coupe as evidence read the sticker. I do like his Chili though and use it as a quick base to make mine. He was also a hell of an engineer and salesman. He just got a little odd later in life...
He was a truly awful person. As a big fan of Vintage Fords it pains me to say so. I used to hold him in high esteem, as many Ford fans do. Then I did just a little bit of research. It doesn’t take much digging to discover his true character. His “charity” was a sham that doled out almost no money but paid him, his family and his cronies handsomely for many years. He took in gobs of money (much of it in cash) for his signature and much of it disappeared before it hit the charity’s books. And of course, as Foo2rama mentioned, he sued every business partner he ever had (not hyperbole—try to find one that he didn’t sue) and alienated much of his fan base by...suing them. He got even worse as he got older and he began suing, or threatening to sue, almost everyone he knew. Ironically, he justified all of these lawsuits as an attempt to “protect his legacy”. He’s one of those famous people who get remembered fondly by history but if you just scratch the surface, you’ll be very disappointed.
