Hello all,

my dad is moderately competent with basic clock repairs having been a dealer in the past. The trouble is he’s getting on in years and is a little out of touch.
He wants to drop some oil onto the movement of this carriage clock. Can someone please recommend an appropriate grade / brand?

thank you

I am pretty sure @Canuck knows the answer.

I had decided not to reply to this post, I’m afraid. I am inclined to answer the question that was NOT asked, rather than to answer the question asked. The question that was NOT asked is how to do a PROPER job on this carriage clock. The question asked was what kind of oil to use. I use NYE clock oil. Meant for clocks. I’ll terminate my reply right there.

From appearances, I’d wager that the carriage clock has a cylinder escapement. I refuse to work on them.

I would use Möbius 9200.

Indeed a proper job would comprise disassembly of the movement, cleaning of the components, inspecting for faults, rectifying eventual faults, reassembling and only then oiling. Simply adding oil will not do good to the movement, because grime has accumulated at the pivots and in the pivot holes, and remains where it is by simply "reoiling". And this grime promotes (further) wear of pivots and pivot holes, despite the added oil.

Cylinder escapements are not that bad or difficult to work with, at least if the cylinder is not worn.

Cheers, Bernhard

Thank you gentlemen. I was a little concerned at his idea to just oil it without disassembly and cleaning but I’m no expert and didn’t want to argue with him. Bringing the matter here has been helpful and I will encourage him to have it professionally serviced.
