Bit of a weird question and forgive me if it's a dumb question, but.... Is it possible, if you own a sapphire, to send it into Omega and have them replace the sapphire with hesalite?

 

No, not possible. I believe they will modify a watch as long as they are modifying it to a non-limited production model (i.e. swapping a black 8500 bezel for orange on the orange numeral dial), but because the entire movement for sapphire vs hesalite is different, for Speedmasters this is not possible.

An independent watchmaker should be able to do it, though.

 

It's nothing to do with the movement, the cases are different for sapphire and hesalite.

 

I'm not talking about changing the movements, I'm talking about changing the case.

The case is slightly different so you could. It a new case and swap the movement but I think that would be not very practical. I believe that someone machined one at some point and swappped one way. It's been brought up on the forums a few times with what I am sure is a better explanation of the issues involved.

I think this is more easily done than a hesalite crystal... there's all sorts of aftermarket caseback options

 

I wish the speediorite had a hesalite crystal.

 

Maybe we can petition for Omega to make a small batch of hesalite crystals for OF member's speedies that have OEM sapphire.
