Can anyone recommend a good (cost effective Geiger counter)? There are so many for sale and the price range varies a lot. I know absolutely nothing about these things, but I want to learn. I live in a 100 year old house, so it would be good to have one, anyway. Are the $300 ones overkill? They seem to vary from $40-$300+.

    Thanks!

There are a good few models in the 100-200 range.

I bought a SOEKS one and I’m happy with that. It’s good enough at distinguishing between lume types, and it gives very repeatable measurements when I’ve rechecked the same watches over an extended period. Radex models seem well thought if too.

    Thanks for the info.
How does it distinguish between lume types?

OK it doesn’t tell me a watch is radium on the screen, but the difference between tritium and radium readings is so great that it’s easy to distinguish what’s what.

I have a SOEKS 01M gen 2. There are loads of Radex models, might be good to see if an owner can make a recommendation.
