This is an exported Omega movement and dial, cased in the USA. The movement is a calibre 490 from ca 1956 to '57. The case is a 10k gold-filled American case but the reference D78638 is not in the Omega database. That's not unusual, and doesn't mean that this is a fake. The condition of the dial is excellent, and the rest of the watch looks pretty good too.

Well done for posting good clear photos

Good quality gold filled Jonell case too. Case is sharp - nice bevel on the bezel and the lugs are reasonably crisp. Movement looks clean and clear of any rust. Looks like time stood still for this piece.

If you don't know the service history of the piece I would opt for a clean and oil.

    Cheers

A thought, yes the movement looks very good, but the inside of the case to my eyes looks grubby in comparison ?

Very few watchmakers seem to clean the inside of the case in anything more than a perfunctory fashion. That's why I like to remove the movement for myself, if possible, and clean the inside of the case and crystal as thoroughly as I do the outside. This is not something which would put me off buying this watch.

Sad reflection on "some" watchmakers - agree, I would not be put off.

IMO, that's about $200 too high. Case looks nice now, but these Jonell cases weren't the highest of quality unfortunately. I'd be very careful about polishing any further.

I like artistic engravings, but this one is too "corporate" for my taste.

    +1

Really more a $275-$325 watch, personal engraving and gold filled case keep the value well below the $500 asking price.

Don't matter if it's in Saigon, Stockholm or San Diego. Price is too high.

It's a worldwide market out there,

It might be a worldwide market, but a $350 watch will be at least 20% more by the time it lands in the UK. Plus all the currency exchange rip-offs of course.

Possibly but not always unless Fedex is involved, been fortunate to receive many pieces with zero tax.
Law of averages I would not hesitate to take a chance.

It depends what the seller declares on the custom documentation (and if it's over £36), and we all know how honest US sellers are because most of them tell us that it's against the law to under-declare on their ebay ads. So it's best to expect to pay and then be pleasantly surprised if you don't have to - but IME it's getting rarer not to. YMMV

Personally, if I wanted this watch I wouldn't begrudge $500 for it. Plenty to enjoy when you wear it. and you can't take the money with you.

    Hey all,
a question for my education: how often was the "10k GF Bez Steelback" found on Omegas case backs? This is the second one I have seen like this; unsure if the other was a Jonell case...and does this affect authenticity or value?

Only on Jonell cases I think. Although I'm sure other case makers made gold-filled bezels with steel backs.

    No. I don't think so.
