So I broke the bracelet on my dads watch in the early 70's and it has been in a drawer ever since. I was wondering if this is something that could be repaired or should I move on and get a Nato or Everest or something else. I looked on eBay for a 1039 and WOW, $$$. Would love to keep it original, but... If anyone knows of someone that might be able to fix please do tell, and if my mission of mending is futile please clue me in.

    Thanks,

Yes , it can be repaired, where are you located? I would ask by a goldsmith , they can do the job [emoji108]

If you're in the U.S., I'd be happy to fix that for the price of postage. If you're in Denmark, postage could get expensive. Shoot me a PM if you like.

It's not hard at all. You just need to locate a replacement springy (expandable) link for a 1039 bracelet. You have 2 of them attached to the buckle in the lower photo. I don't notice any available on eBay now but they do come up regularly. He is the how to:

If the bracelet is long enough without the broken link, you can just remove it although the braclet looks short to begin with. The links have risen to about $100 each unfortunately but your, very nice, Speedie 105.012 has risen in value as well

    Good luck

I'm in Denver, CO and I just might take you up on that. Would gladly pay you more than postage!
    Thank you

Your right, it does look a bit short, and that process looks a bit above my ability. I'm a bit frightened of repeating the events of 40+ years ago and making it even worse, but I do appreciate that info and if I'm feeling gutsy I might give it a shot. Thank you very much!

You can alway purchase a replacement 1039 bracelet on eBay. They come up regularly in various lengths and you have your old bracelet for spares to lengthen.

Another alternative is pick up at more robust vintage 1116 or 1171 bracelet. They cost less as well and are much stronger for daily use. See the chart below.

I was looking at this chart earlier and wondered that exactly. My main reason for wanting the bracelet repaired is it's the one my dad wore and sentimental. That being said, I wouldn't mind having something a with a bit more meat, as long as that's not sacrilegious:) Thank you for answering that question!

And just to beat the drum, make sure to get it serviced by a competent watchmaker whom will not touch the dial, hands, bezel, etc.

Good point on a replacement 1039. Once you've got the correct length using your old links, you can sell the rest on eBay to help defray the cost of the "new" 1039.

I have a 1171/633 and the links are a bit loose. Is there a similar technique to tighten them up.

Get it repaired and look out for a 1175 to wear instead. It has a similar 'flat' link appearance but is more robust.

I believe they do but only if attached to a watch.

Echo that. Have my 1039 bracelet (in 3 bits) currently with them:)
