The protection provided by the layer of leather padding would be a help, considering the absence of modern shock protection. Enough to make it Soldier-proof??... (probably would need considerably more padding on top of what @TexOmega has here)

Well, take it up with the US govt........made from their specifications, 1917.😁

Gotta remember, all this wrist wearing of watches using a pocketwatch was by necessity, and was a new phenomenon.

More grunts on the ground than watches.

I've read documents stating an officer needed 2 watches, one for accuracy(PW) and one for convenience(wrist)

And, of course, there were guards for the crystal, but few were actually at the Front.

Well, here is @Duracuir1 's custom WWI strap made to US govt spec for my Hamilton cal 992 (and #992 out of 1000 requested) supplied to the US Engineer Corps.

Superb fit and finish, quite a piece of Art.

Thank you, @Duracuir1

Adoption was on both sides

That is excellent ::psy::. Nice work @Duracuir1 And congrats @TexOmega

We are lucky to have craftsmen with great skills willing to offer their wares.👍

Now.......do we have any members who can produce a 1953 Corvette in red in their workshop? 😗

Hey Bernhard. Aren’t those engines usually behind the driver?

Somewhat later, yes. No front engined any more since about 1978. Except if you prefer reverse gear driving 😁

That engine in that attitude looks expensive ... as in expensive to effect repair and button things back up.

Fifty years ago, or so, Bob Newhart did a skit based on an imaginary meeting of the design committee postulating on the feasibility of the Corvair. One of the assembled committee members used the analogy of the Roman chariot, and that the Corvair was like putting the cart before the horse!

Sorry for OT, but I really like the Corvair, brilliant design. Early Porsches are not less "dangerous".

Over a year ago @TexOmega showed this military spec sheet for a wristlet. It was for a 30 ish mm watch. Tex asked if I could try to make him one for a 50 mm pocket watch. I started making a few with different leathers, including pig skin as is specified above. (Likely because pig skin was cheap).

The first few that I made were too soft and the leather around the dial would stretch and take an oval shape, much like the old original wristlet that you will see in the photos below.

So, after a few tries, all I can write dear @TexOmega is « Mission Attempted! ».

I am looking forward to seeing if his watch will fit. The variable is the crown, but I used a watch of similar size and crown so fingers crossed.

I wanted to keep the edge as thin as possible but had to still leave it wide enough to help support the rounded shape around the dial.

Here are photos. The small wristlet is what I believe to be an original. I used it as a guide. The flightmaster is there because I’ve been wearing it almost non stop since December 29th..

This is my military Minerva, but impossible for me to wear it, wrist too little

Great example......and I would be STUNNED if it fit any wrist unless one is 6'8" and 350lbs with arms/wrists like a gorilla.

Well...

... I'm feeling the humiliating shame for I've got long ape arms (gotta have shirts with 37-inch sleeves) and 8-inch wrists. Am only 6'3" and 215 lbs though so not quite of gorilla proportions, hah!
