Actually saw this on TV this morning when they were showing pictures of this, apparently to celebrate creating his new Caliphate the big guy treated himself to an Aqua Terra Calibre 8500.

Personally, if I'd just created a new caliphate, I'd have gone with something more appropriate such as a Darkside of the Moon, which would colour co-ordinate with the black robes far more and be difficult for western media to identify in pictures.

 

So... he's a lefty?

 

I think the omega choice is laudable. So many strongmen and tyrants just get lazy and go with the Rolex.

I think the reason this gets so much attention is media still think of watches as a status symbol of sorts and something wealthy people buy to prove how much money they have. Then when there's a religious leader wearing one they can claim they're selfish, materialistic or whatever.

They don't seem to understand that most older men wear watches, and many prefer a quality timepiece.

Pope John Paul II (Catholic) wore a Rolex Datejust
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow (Russian Orthodox) wears a Breguet
Dalai Lama (Buddhist) wears one of 15 watches, mainly solid gold Rolex

Although not in the same category... L Ron Hubbard was also a mad Rolex collector and was never seen without one.
