As we all know, the Speedy was on the moon and that it wasn't the "only". I was always under the impression that the other was a Waltham chrono which apparently is untrue. I read that Commander David Scott was contacted and this is the watch he wore on the lunar surface. He has kept it and this is a picture he took himself.
details here... http://www.mybulova.com/forums/bulova-chronograph-flown-moon-apollo-15 Picture taken February of 2014. excerpt from link... [Scott, from a 1996 letter - "I do not recall ever having looked at my watch after egress. In the cabin after EVA-2, I noticed that the crystal of my Omega had popped off sometime during the EVA. Therefore, on EVA-3, I used my backup watch (which was) of a similar type. It worked just fine during the even higher temperatures of EVA-3."] [In Dave's 1996 letter to me, he said that the back-up watch was a Waltham. After further researching the issue for an article on watches, Dave wrote in early 2014, "Frankly, back in 1996 I just made a mistake -- it was a Bulova, not a Waltham. When you asked in '96, things were a bit hazy after 25 years, and I hadn't fully researched many of the ancillary parts of the mission. However, more things are coming into focus these days as more people are researching Apollo."
This was a great link. What I recall from reading it when it first made its way here, my memory is that short, the Bulova guys were trying to identify the watch. Anyway, the Hatfields and McCoys will stick to their guns over this.
Didn't realize there was such a radical Bulova collector group out there. I like them but put them in the same category as Elgin, Waltham, etc. Ba-zillions were made and therefore not as revered. As we say in Texas: You can't hardly swing a dead cat in the room without hitting one ;-)
Upon request: Apollo 15 Commander David Scott also took a Bulova stopwatch to time DOI - Descent Orbit Insertion The A15 lunar EVA-2 hesalite pop-off from his NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster n° 42 chronograph was not documented in the A15 mission report, while Charlie Duke had the same "problem" during EVA-3 on Apollo 16, his "incident" was very well documented in the A16 mission report. Anyway, Scott wore the 44 mm Bulova 885104 prototype chronograph during A15 lunar EVA-3 until splash-down and post recovery events. It was auctioned as the only privately-owned wrist watch worn on the Moon in October 2015. #MoonwatchUniverse
