Thanks. If anything falls through with the watchmaker who has it I’ll certainly follow up with Mr. Heist. Much appreciate the referral.

Picked the Breitling up from the watchmaker last weekend but haven’t had a chance to tinker with it yet. I’m going to try to figure out how to set everything tonight and will then be casually checking the daily rate over the next week. Once I’ve settled on an appropriate 21mm strap I’ll post some updated pics, but until then it looks just like it did before being serviced, which is exactly the way it should.

I’d recommend sending it to Mark Heist at:

https://horologicalservices.com/

He specializes in vintage Breitling, and given the complexity of that movement and the probability that it needs some replacement parts a specialist is your best bet.

He is the top expert in the US. I had a watch repaired by him. The Breitling company themselves recommend him. 6+ month wait for repairs. He has access to rare parts.

Figured out how to set the pointer date, day, month and moon phase (wrist shot is before all that was done). I had requested a full service of the movement only, and the watchmaker agreed that for a piece in this condition nothing else internal or external should be touched, though he did suggest giving some attention to the lume deterioration on the hands at some point. He also stated there were no parts that required replacement as the internal condition indicated the watch hadn’t been worn much. I use the Hairspring iOS app and after a full wind it’s averaging +12 seconds per day, measured at rest with the dial up. I haven’t checked it in different positions or at less than full wind but I’m pretty satisfied at this point. The watch looks exactly as it did when I left it in their care so I didn’t take many new pictures, but I did take a few macros for fun.

A great story and a beautiful watch "found " and preserved. It was fortuitous that your brother in law came to you , a pawn shop would have had a Hay Day giving the new owner peanuts !
